Kauai has a way of seeping into your bones, but it requires an adventurous spirit and a measure of flexible thinking. We didn't go to too many restaurants, as we cooked a lot, but we did enjoy Hideaways Pizza. Tidepools at the Hyatt was a big disappointment. Luckily, the rain arrived as we were finishing the hike, but it gets very slippery very fast.Ħ. We loved the canyon hike to the waterfall, but do not try it if it looks like rain.

It's a great beach, though a lot more crowded than I remember.ĥ. The better path is the paved one near Pali Ke Kua condos - there's a sign close to Building 1. We all had hiking/water shoes, and it was still slippery. I saw people attempting it in flip flops and holding small children in their arms. There are sections where you're basically rappelling down a mountain using a rope to hold onto. The hike down to Hideaways that's near the old Princeville Hotel was a lot more treacherous than I remember it being 20 years ago. The right side was calmer for swimming.Ĥ. It had something for everything - a stream that was big enough to swim in and also the regular beach with some great wave action for boogie boarding. Our favorite swimming beach was Kalihiwai. The water was starting to get rougher by the time we left at 11:30, so it's smart to get there early.ģ. The water is very shallow, and you're almost touching the coral, so you have to be careful. There's a wonderful food truck that pulls up late morning, and the fruit smoothies were excellent. Get there early because the lot fills up.

At Tunnels you really have to walk all the way to the right to get to the reef, but we enjoyed the experience of hiking there. Our favorite snorkeling beach was Tunnels. The Hyatt felt artificial to all of us, but the kids did enjoy the pools.Ģ. Beautiful property on a long stretch of beach that not's swimmable but lovely nonetheless. That's where I stayed 20 years ago, and it had the same laid back feeling I remember from my last visit. In retrospect, I wish we had ditched the Hyatt and spent the last few nights at Waimea Plantation Cottages on the west side instead. I'm so glad we did so, because we really got to experience the totality of the island that way. We split our visit - 5 nights in a condo at Emmalani Court and 2 nights at the Hyatt. Here are a few thoughts that might be helpful for others planning either a first time trip or a return trip:ġ. I traveled with my two boys and husband, as well as another family. It's been 20 years since I last visited Kauai to do a solo hike on the Kalalau Trail, and while I didn't repeat the hike (I'm not in quite the shape I used to be), the trip was just as magical as I remember.
